B&C DE-120 Driver Update 2/21/25

Sad to say there is an update on these drivers. Now the covid stuff has come and gone for some years now but the ripple effects are still here with B&C. For some time they could get away with the idea that production had been crippled by this thing. Covid however is way behind us now and so the letter I received this week really baffles me. I had my last delivery of DE-120’s two weeks ago and I am being told the next production of these will be in TWO MONTHS!.

So once the factory has them done, and then waits for the full shipping container before shipping and then shipping and I think it could easily be three months between available DE-120’s. This is hardly a way to support customers whose income depends on your product which mine does in part. I have responded that this is not the right answer and will be offering the Celestion CDX1-1412 as an alternative both here and on my EBay site to the DE-120.

I have not listened to the CDX1 in person but a number of people who have heard the DE-120 and the CDX1 from places like the AudioKarma forum state they are extremely close. Curves run on these two drivers say the same thing and most importantly the CDX1 will fit everywhere the DE-120 does. I have stock coming in on the CDX1 within a week to try out and see what customers will think. Based on what the AK forum members say these CDX1’s will be an admirable alternative and if you like one you will like the other.

For myself I have to admit to being more then a little disgusted that B&C would find that a three month delay in product is OK. Surely they can’t believe that! The other alternative is their supply of factory capacity or rare earth magnets is not up to the job. This same problem came up a year ago so it is not the first time and they normally run us out at least twice a year. A year ago I was told supply was not a problem any more and I quit placing larger orders since the $$$ pile up real fast with these. Judging by what was on hand at various times and who runs out I have a pretty good feel for answering the question “did they make enough or not”. NO they do not make enough for whatever reason and here we all sit once again.

I am not going down this path and so seek to make sure either the CDX1 or the DE-120 is on hand at all times from now on. B&C, if you do not want me to have stock perhaps Celestion will be happy to sell to me.

I wonder if this is part of China’s plan though. Rare earths are something that the EPA has eliminated production of in the USA just like they killed off the magnet production for speakers. So today our adversary has control of our rare earth magnets and mining and refining of the same. It could very well be that all these speaker companies get what they are allotted by China. They can hardly admit that since they foolishly allowed all our production to be hijacked by CPA MBA morons who sent it all over to China to save money and avoid onerous diktats in the EPA. The end result is horrible pollution because China does not care about the environment and never ending supply bottlenecks because MBA’s and CPA’s can’t see past the next quarters manipulated earnings report.

As you might be able to tell I am pretty frustrated by conditions that stymie my production. I am working on it though and hope between the two companies I can keep my valued customers supplied with SMAHL’s and LMAHL’s.

Sitting here and thinking about MBA brilliance. Like this gem. “Stock sitting on your shelf is not earning you money so don’t stock what you sell. Produce it when the demand is there.” Of course you can’t sell what you don’t have and since you had none your customers did not place an order. In MBA babble speak logic this means that next year for your projected needs based production you won’t need as many since the year earlier when you had none to sell you did not sell as many. Pretty cool huh?

MAHL’S Time Alignment For Any Speaker

Time alignment is something that people with La Scalas and KHorns have requested over the years. As a matter of fact the very first demand for free standing MAHL’s came from these Klipsch owners. As a result I have tinkered with various free standing MAHL’s for a while now. Mostly these are very limited production and most of the time are single unique sets only. I do my best to find figured wood and make these works of redeeming visual appeal as well as real audio quality improvement. Here is a set with Crotch Black Walnut and Black Locust live edge cookies.

My first effort at time aligning was forced on me with my Super MWM set which had a 108″ throat on the single fold bass bin. I had to use DSP for that and also to dial in the K-402 horn on top. The guys who were asking about free standing MAHL’s however were typically dealing with time aligning maybe 12″ at best. I could never hear any difference with a 12″ time alignment. With 108″ though there was a clear muddiness added when not time aligned so when these guys asked for MAHL’s for 12″ or less time alignment I just figured they could hear much better then I could and set about making some.

Now along the way in talking to other K-402 owners I find that almost all of them spent some time aiming those big horns radially and for vertical tilt. With a set in hand to play with I quickly found out that aiming was a real thing for best results.

A year or two later found me working on my own complete two way speaker and I elected to do a two way. I used the same basic cavity shape for the SMAHL and LMAHL for the much larger 14″ x 7″ mouth 6.75″ deep solid wood horn and found that this basic tractrix cavity design scaled up really well.

Now insofar as time alignment went with this larger wood horn and the 12″ woofers the depth difference was negligible but rotating and tilting was something that clearly improved the sound.

So I go back to fiddling with looking at what customers had done with their free standers and they did not tilt but they all rotated to a sweet spot of their choosing. So I elected to design and cut free standing sets that did rotation only. This set of White Oak was my test bed for axial improvement. These are cut with the same exact proven cavity shape as the LMAHL’s and stand up high enough to clear any typical cabinet top reflections.

The axial adjustment alone made a real difference and I had to wonder how much aiming had to do with improved sound over less then a millisecond sound travel time would do with displacement from the front of the speaker.

The other really neat thing about these is that this idea works on any three way speaker they have been tried on to improve sound quality with a big enough flat spot on top. Lets face it, three sets of drivers on a fixed plane can never be aimed for that sweet spot. I will tell you that in my experience the HF has an influence on all the other drivers and until it is right nothing is right. When you have the HF dialed in correctly the bass sounds better as do the mids and you hear things you never heard before with those same speakers and aiming those tweeters is definitely a part of doing this. Go and look at comments on AudioKarma about the LMAHL or SMAHL and see what people say. Go to EBay and look at the feedback for the LMAHL V2 and SMAHL V2 tweeters.

It was entirely unexpected by me that the HF would improve it all and by a big margin but much to my utter delight it did. I remember telling people about this and they laughed at me. So I started a try it and see for various forum members. I would send them a set to try. If they did not like them I also paid to have them sent back so no one was out one thin dime to try. I never got one set back and what I got was how much are they and reviews that said the same thing I had been laughed at for claiming 😀

It is a diabolical trap for scoffers that they do not regret falling into.

I happen to really like high quality output. My very first customer for everything I do is me and I am in search of music quality that can make the hair stand up on your arms (the Super MWM) or bring tears to your eyes like Julia Fischer playing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on my yet un-named but ready for production two way. First one going out to a customer in Louisville,KY later this month.

Here is the link to Julia’s Four Seasons. I downloaded the high res file and saved it. A trip through Audacity and using the high definition soundcard driver available for my Dell PC I use as a music server and this thing will stir your soul. By the way I generally make time for visitors and if you happen to be in the Nashville area with time on your hands drop me a line here ahead of time and you are welcome to stop in.

About That Klipsch K-77 You Have

There are times when I get people who want to buy just a set of SMAHL lenses from me, which of course I am delighted to do. However for the sake of avoiding bad choices on the buyers part I am learning to ask questions about intended use. Perhaps the most common one is what driver do you intend to use.

I think some make assumptions about their K-77’s without ever having taken them apart. They just assume I guess that everything fits everything because it will save them money by reusing that old dog barker K-77 magnet and diaphragm assemble.

Now I think it is time to explain something here before I go any further. Why would you want to reuse any part of these old Klipsch tweeters is beyond me. Whether it is the Ti diaphragm bandage on the 2.5cm lens like those on a Forte or Chorus or Cornwall 2 and on, or thinking that you can reuse the old magnet assemblies, even if you could which you can’t though, why? Why take inferior parts of old designs long since passed by with current state of the art designs which sound much better, and cripple new parts with bad pieces.

In the case of the Ti diaphragms you still have that old horn and magnet and phase plug. All you have done is refresh the OEM diaphragm with one that will sound shrill and tinny and are not cheap. It might sound better then the old one did but replacing worthless with bad is not an option I would choose. I had one set of those Ti diaphragms and that mess was part of what led me to designing the MAHL’s to begin with. I thought they were awful and listed them on EBay right away.

In any case though I digress and back to the dog barker. It is time to talk about that money saving idea of reusing the K-77 parts. Here is the clamp plate in position with the face that the drivers mount onto. This clamp plate has three hole patterns for commonly available current drivers.

Here is the base of the magnet assembly and the diaphragm is in behind the bug screen. Lots of these old K-77 drivers go bad because they are 5 watt drivers and subject to power problems far more readily then the DE-120 drivers which are 20 watts. Notice the raised boss on the bottom which will only fit

This old diecast zinc horn lens with it’s design which was not changed or updated in any significant way for over 40 years. I have a couple of the old late 60’s chrome plated EV-35’s in my cabinet with the same exact horn as the K-77’s used all the way through the early 2000’s. Time and technology passed these poor things by and Klipsch could have cared less because of tradition. Customers have been buying these for a long time so why change was the corporate philosophy I guess.

There is no way to make this stuff work with SMAHL’s. I do not intend to ever make an adapter to allow for doing so either because this bad sound set of parts was what led me to looking elsewhere to begin with.

Another thing that comes up once in a while is substitute drivers for the DE-120. The number of drivers that will actually fit the restricted spot the K-77 went into are very few. I was asked this week again about using DE-10 drivers on the SMAHL. Yes while there is a hole set there for those bolt patterns the DE-10 is much to large in diameter to ever fit your old La Scala or Heresy or K-Horn on Klipsch OEM cabinets.

I am amazed at the durability of the older Klipsch plywood Heritage speakers and with the replacement of crossover caps that need changing and ditching those crummy old tweeters those Klipsch speakers can readily be made much better sounding and will last you a lifetime.

Crites CT120 Dropin Replacement Update

I now have an update to these and some pictures to help explain. These will require some work on the buyers or installers part. The flange fits perfectly but the cutout will need to be enlarged to allow the body to drop in.

So you will need to cut out each side.

The customer who was my test case for fit up obviously did not have optimal tools on hand for doing this and was eager to get them in and hear them. I imagine we all can relate to that and it worked out fine and the ragged edges were hidden.

Here is the inside view of these in place.

Now here is what he had to say initially about the install.

“They sound good, I just installed 1200.00 of upgraded networks from Dean and didn’t have them that long before I installed your lens. I’m coming from Tekton Double Impacts and I know there a lot of haters out there, but they are really good sounding speakers. These are obviously horns speakers but I’m digging them and they compare to the DI detail. Keep them the same as the pair you sent me and just let them know that they require a bit of massaging with an oscillating tool. Guys that are brave enough to start changing out tweeter lens should be able to do that little bit of trimming!”

Shortly after he sends this.

“Another thing, even if they didn’t improve the sound and I definitely think they do, they look bad ass. Nice work!”
